Tawau’s tropical rainforest run on Nov 26

The second edition of the Tropical Rainforest Run 2023 is scheduled for Nov 26 at Tawau Hills Park.

The run, featuring two routes: a challenging 21km tropical rainforest trail and a family-friendly 6km sulphurous springs fun run.

The 21km route follows the demanding Mount Lucia trail, ascending to 800m, said Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Christina Liew.

Categories include men and women in both open and veteran (ages 40 and above for men, 35 and above for women) divisions.

The 6km fun run explores the sulphurous hot spring route, known for its turquoise-coloured water due to minerals present  she said.

This trail provides a delightful experience amidst the wilderness of Tawau Hills Park, offering opportunities to spot diverse wildlife and plants, she added.

Liew said the race’s focal point—the chance to run amidst the towering Yellow Meranti trees, recognised as the world’s tallest tropical trees.

“Tawau Hills Park proudly hosts the second tallest Yellow Meranti tree, standing at an impressive 99.2m as of 2019,” said Liew.

Apart from the diverse wildlife, she said the park features captivating waterfalls, including the Table Waterfall and Gelas Waterfall.

The event aims to raise awareness about rainforest conservation and contribute 10 per cent of the running fees to support conservation projects in collaboration with Sabah Parks.

With 250 participants already registered, including international entrants from Kenya, Australia, Canada, Japan, Indonesia, and Singapore, registration remains open at www.hellosabah.com.

Participants are entitled to receive a running T-shirt, a race bib, a finisher’s medal, and a digital e-certificate. Exciting cash prizes and vouchers worth over RM50,000 await participants.

The event is not exclusive to runners; locals are encouraged to visit the venue, explore exhibition booths at Tawau Hills Park, and participate in a lucky draw for a chance to win fantastic prizes sponsored by Malaysia Aviation Group.

The event is made possible through the generous support of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Environment Sabah (KePKAS), the Ministry of Tourism, Arts & Culture (MOTAC), Sabah Tourism Board (STB), and Tourism Malaysia.

The run is co-organised by Sabah Parks, Tawau Municipal Council (MPT), and Tawau Runner Club, along with key partners Life Water Marketing Sdn Bhd, Borneo Royale Hotel, and PMG Pharmacy Tawau.
