Sabah bids to host IFLA World Congress 2031

The Sabah Local Government and Housing Ministry (KKTP) and the Institute of Landscape Architects Malaysia (ILAM) are bidding to host the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA) World Congress in 2031.

Both bodies also plan to attend the 2025 IFLA Congress in France next year.

Deputy Chief Minister II and Local Government and Housing Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam, believes Sabah’s natural beauty will strengthen tourism and the local economy.

Speaking at the Sabah Landscape Architecture Awards (SLAA) 2024  on 1 November held at the Sabah International Convention Centre, Dr Joachim highlighted the power of top-notch landscape architecture.

It embodies sustainability, resilience, and a deep respect for nature, he said.

He sees these award-winning projects as models for promoting biodiversity, reducing environmental impact, and creating healthier communities.

Dr Joachim hopes they will inspire future generations to focus on sustainable practices.

The SLAA 2024, launched by KKTP, recognises and promotes sustainable landscape practices across Sabah.

This initiative aligns with the Sabah State Landscape Policy Action Plan, specifically Core Five: Cultivating Love for the Landscape.

“We want both professionals and the public to value Sabah’s landscapes,” Dr Joachim stated.

He also introduced the new  “Meranti Award”, launched during the I-HIJAU Festival on 27 February 2024.

“This award honours local authorities’ efforts in sustainable development and green space management.

“It marks our shared commitment to making Sabah beautiful and sustainable.”
