Sabah plans direct KK-Sendai charter flight

KOTA KINABALU: 27 October 2026S

Sabah will launch a direct charter flight between Kota Kinabalu and Sendai on 30 Dec 2026 to strengthen tourism ties with Japan and open access to its northern Tohoku region.

The plan was discussed during a courtesy call on Assistant Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Dr Andi Md Shamsureezal Mohd Sainal, by Japan Travel Bureau (Malaysia) executive director Takeshi Otsuki, branch manager Liew Khen Hee and Dreamland Discovery director Hiew Vun Lip.

The charter follows the successful Osaka sakura tour charter in late March this year.

Sendai, capital of the Tohoku region in northeast Japan, offers winter attractions including snow-covered landscapes and cultural heritage sites.

Andi said: “Japan is an important market for Sabah. This charter gives Sabahans direct access beyond Japan’s traditional hubs, and gives Japanese travellers direct access to Sabah’s nature, culture and hospitality.

Air connectivity drives tourism growth. Charter operations to new destinations help us build sustainable partnerships that benefit local businesses, operators and communities, he said.

“As we prepare for Visit Sabah Year 2027, we must strengthen our competitiveness and expand our reach into Japan, South Korea, China and Europe,” he said.

He welcomed plans  to explore further Sabah-Japan charters in 2027, noting that connectivity must deliver two-way benefits – more choices for Sabahans and more visitors, investment and economic opportunities for Sabah.-HS
