The Romania Garden was established to mark 55 years of diplomatic ties between Malaysia and Romania.
Located next to the ITCC commercial building in Penampang, the garden serves as a tribute to the strong bond between both nations particularly in Sabah.
Honorary Consul of Romania for Sabah, Datuk Seri Clarence Malakun, shared that they had initially planned to plant Romania’s national oak trees, but sourcing them in Sabah was difficult.
The garden was launched by Romania’s Ambassador to Malaysia and Brunei, Nineta Barbulescu. The event included a lighting ceremony and fireworks.
Clarence reflected on his appointment as Honorary Consul in 2012 by former Ambassador Petru Petra, though the consulate was only officially opened in 2013 under Ambassador Constantin Nistor.
