Sabah expands durian agrotourism with launch of second edition booklet

The second edition of the Agrotourism Durian Farm in Sabah booklet was launched, marking a significant expansion of Sabah’s durian agrotourism roadmap.

Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industries Minister Datuk Jamawi Jaafar said the programme has grown from 11 orchards in its first edition two years ago to 30 orchards this year.

Most of the participating orchards, which offer a unique Sabah farmland experience, are members of the Sabah Durian and Tropical Fruit Planters Association (MaSDa).

The booklet was launched in conjunction with the Sabah Durian Tourism Bazaar held at the Segama Waterfront from 12 to 14 December, featuring 55 stalls selling fruits, beverages and food industry products.

Jamawi said about 14 orchards, mostly MaSDa members, were directly involved in fruit sales.

He explained that the bazaar adopted a direct-from-orchard-to-consumer concept, eliminating middlemen and allowing visitors to enjoy farm prices.

Musang King, usually sold at around RM80 a kilo elsewhere, were offered at RM55 to RM65 a kilo.

He stressed that the event was designed to complement, not compete with, long-established durian traders in nearby areas.

Jamawi added that the initiative also aims to showcase the quality of local produce and address issues related to fruit quality, labelling, cleanliness and food safety, with the goal of strengthening Sabah’s tourism appeal.

Tourism Malaysia’s Director of Package Development Division, Zuraini Abd Ghani, said the second edition reflects Sabah’s commitment to community-based tourism and forms part of preparations towards Visit Malaysia Year 2026.

The booklet features 24 local farm operators and agrotourism packages across Tamparuli, Menggatal, Papar, Tenom, Tawau and other rural areas, offering experiences ranging from half-day orchard visits to farm-based homestays and tastings of unique Sabah durians such as pulu, dalit and sukang.
