Tourism remains the backbone of Sabah’s economy, generating over 380,000 jobs and contributing 15 per cent to the state’s GDP last year.

In 2023 alone, the sector added RM13.1 billion to the economy.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the real impact of tourism goes beyond numbers, touching lives and supporting families.
He highlighted how community-based tourism is helping uplift rural communities across the state.
He said this in his speech read by Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew at the launch of the ASEAN Travel Exchange (ATEX 2025) at a resort.
He added that the local villagers are creating unique Sabahan experiences that continue to attract visitors.
In 2024, the sector brought in RM7 million from 18 districts, and more initiatives are being rolled out to further benefit rural areas.
The state is investing in better infrastructure, including upgrades to the Kota Kinabalu International Airport, improved access roads to rural destinations, and digital tools to enhance visitor experiences.
Sabah is also embracing sustainable tourism, green principles, and digital innovation to position itself as a leading host for global events.
Hajiji said Sabah aspires to be a peace hub, balancing business, culture, and nature with responsible development.
He described ATEX 2025 as a milestone for Sabah, offering the state a chance to shape ASEAN’s tourism future.
He welcomed regional industry leaders to collaborate, forge new partnerships, and drive growth together.
