Sri Pelancongan Chief Executive Officer Thonny Chee, said the creativity displayed at the installation of arts was an urgent call for Sabah to focus on environmental sustainability.
Themed “Striving for Sustainability,” the exhibition emphasises the importance of upcycling reusable materials.
He said this during the launch of the 11th edition of Installation Art by the Bay @KK 2024 at Tanjung Aru Beach from September 20 to 23.
The materials used in the installations—scrap metal, plastic, cardboard, tree branches, leaves, and fabrics—once considered waste, have been transformed into vibrant stories that challenge us to rethink our consumption habits, he said.
Each piece serves as a bold statement on the environmental challenges we face and a call to action that resonates deeply, he added.
“Each artwork reminds us that every effort counts, and together, we can create a sustainable future,” said Chee.
“Let us carry forward the message that sustainability is not just an ideal but an achievable reality,” he continued.
As a tourism advocate, Chee believes that more permanent installation art should be developed around the city.
“Our city is already known for its murals, but we need more sculptures and art installations to further enrich our tourism development strategies.
“This will lead to increased tourism, an improved quality of life, and a society that is educated, inspired, and creatively stimulated,” he said.
