LANGKAWI: Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry (MOTAC) in collaboration with ASEAN National Tourism Organisations (NTOs) is organising Sustainable Practices for Hotel Waste Management in ASEAN Tourism Industry Workshop on October 4-7.
It aims to promote sustainable practices in hotel waste management through training-of-trainers programme.
60 people from the ASEAN member states, ministries, state governments and local governments attended.
They will be exposed to a series of lectures, group discussions, onsite training, knowledge sharing, best practices and exchange of ideas on all aspects related to sustainable and green practices in managing hotel waste.
It was held at Cottage by the Sea Langkawi, formerly known as Frangipani Resorts and Spa, the recipient of the ASEAN Green Hotel Award for the period of 2010-2011, 2012-2014 and 2016-2018.
In his opening speech, Datuk Mohd Zamri Mat Zain, Deputy Secretary-General (Tourism), MOTAC said: “The Covid-19 pandemic has provided opportunities for the tourism industry to reset, restart and recover sustainably.
“Therefore, our presence here today is a small step we are taking toward our journey to make ASEAN a sustainable tourism destination”.
MOTAC hopes the participants would implement and share the knowledges as well as experiences learned with their respective countries and organisations on the practical solutions and green practices.
This can help in protecting the environment as well as providing extra benefit to the sustainability and competitiveness of the tourism industries and businesses.
At the national level, MOTAC is committed in propagating sustainable tourism in the development agenda.
As such, the National Tourism Policy (NTP) 2020-2030 was developed with a transformation strategy dedicated to fostering sustainable tourism development through practising sustainable and responsible tourism.
Malaysia believes that the agenda to foster sustainable and responsible tourism in the ASEAN region will be made possible with good cooperation from ASEAN Member States, local government, private sectors and the local communities.-HS
