KOTA KINABALU: Let’s live in harmony with our wildlife as we strive to protect our animals.
This was message conveyed by Sabah Wildlife Department director Augustine Tuugu during the World Elephant Day 2020 celebration at the Lok Kawi Wildlife Park on Aug 12, Wed.
“For instance, we must be more responsible with the elephants especially when we come across them for example on the Kalabakan-Nabawan road.
“Do not disturb them, if there is any problem please contact the nearest wildlife office and we will provide the assistance,” he said.
The annual international event celebrated on Aug 12 is aimed to raise the public awareness on the conservation of elephants especially in Sabah, he said.
The department still continues to celebrate the event amid the COVID-19 pandemic and movement control order yesterday, but with a simple programme to comply with the Ministry of Health’s standard operating procedure, he said.
In order to bring the public closer to the elephant conservation efforts, several engagement events were held such as storytelling and Tik Tok 5R wildlife competitions as well as a wild-wild walk programme for kids to learn more about animal in the park.
He hoped that through the activities the people will be able to understand the message that they are conveying in urging them to live in coexistence with the wildlife. -HS
