Hypertension can lead to kidney disease and diabetic complications in the legs.
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects over 850 million people worldwide and resulted in over 3.1 million deaths in 2019.
Presently, kidney disease ranks as the 8th leading cause of death, and if left unaddressed, it is projected to be the 5th leading cause of years of life lost by 2040.
Therefore, it is crucial to emphasize the importance of kidney health and its risk factors, stated Resident Consultant Nephrologist and Physician at KPJ Sabah, Dr Bharathan Thevarajah.
He made these remarks during a health talk on “Hypertension” organised by KPJ Sabah Specialist Hospital in conjunction with World Kidney Day 2024. Specialist Nurse Noni Jaharun spoke on the topic “Diabetic Foot Care” during the programme.
World Kidney Day 2024 is celebrated every year on March 14. This year’s theme is “Kidney Health for All.” It is marked by global events, health screenings, and educational campaigns focused on kidney health.
KPJ Sabah hosted a mini carnival inviting the public and healthcare providers to join the activities. The aim was to raise awareness of the importance of kidneys and the vital role they play in overall health.
It also aimed to appreciate and acknowledge dialysis patients for their high spirits in enduring life with kidney failure.
“KPJ Sabah World Kidney Day 2024 focuses on the increasing burden of chronic kidney disease and achieving optimal kidney care to overcome these challenges at different levels,” said KPJ Sabah General Manager Mohamad Faizal Mohamed.
The public participated in basic health screenings, and dialysis patients received goodie bags. The public also had the chance to win lucky draw prizes and engaged in the Slido quiz.
The programme emphasizes the significance of reducing the impact and burden of kidney disease worldwide, benefiting the participants.
