The recent blackout at Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA), the second busiest airport in Malaysia, has raised safety concerns for aircraft and passengers.
Dato’ Seri Winston Liaw, Chairman of Sabah Association of Tour and Travel Agents, emphasized the need for Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) to install a standby generator for immediate power restoration during outages.
He expressed disappointment as a member of the Sabah Economic Advisory Committee overseeing the airport’s well-being.
Despite lasting under half an hour, the incident sparked worries and was shared on social media.
Liaw highlighted the airport’s role in attracting tourists and foreign investments.
He called for better attention to technical issues and expressed eagerness to discuss concerns with MAHB’s top management.
Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd clarified that the blackout resulted from internal technical problems within the airport building, with no disruption in electricity supply from their substation.
The incident prompted questions about the airport’s electricity supply system meeting user demands, including foreign tourists.
