Intrepid Travel has joined forces with a British travel YouTuber to offer his followers a chance to explore Sabah’s wildlife and nature.
After being delayed by the pandemic, content creator Karl Watson and his 15 followers from various countries including United States, United Kingdom, Czech Republic, Malta and Australia embarked on an 11-day tour in April 2023, organised by Intrepid Travel.
Karl began working with the adventure travel company in 2019 to develop bespoke, sustainable group tours worldwide.
With over 10 years of experience creating travel documentaries and more than 227,000 subscribers to his YouTube channel, Karl chose Sabah as the second destination for a bespoke group tour.
“I’ve been considering a trip to Borneo because I like nature,” he said. “So, I looked at Intrepid’s Borneo itinerary, did my research, and said to myself, ‘Yes, let’s go on a full nature wildlife adventure.”‘
During the trip, the group climbed Mount Kinabalu, explored Sandakan and the Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre, went on a river cruise down the Kinabatangan River, and visited Selingan Turtle Island, among other destinations.
Karl praised Sabah for its stunning natural beauty and unique wildlife, but also highlighted its rich cultural heritage and welcoming multiethnic population.
The global adventure travel company, Intrepid Travel, has been operating for more than 30 years and focuses on sustainable and responsible tourism, community engagement, and reducing environmental impact.
The partnership with Karl allowed him to customise the itinerary, make it more sustainable, and sell it on his website and YouTube.
Sabah was initially intended to be the group’s second bespoke group tour destination, but due to the pandemic, it became the seventh.
Despite the delay, Karl was enamoured by Sabah’s charm and stated, “This trip is a perfect introduction to Borneo, and I would like to come back to explore Sabah deeper, especially the national parks and off-the-beaten paths.”
The Sabah Tourism Board hosted a dinner for the group at a hotel, where they enjoyed local delicacies and a traditional dance performance.
