Datuk Dr Ammar Abd Ghapar has been appointed as the new director general of the Malaysian Tourism Promotion Board (Tourism Malaysia), effective from 12 April 2023.
He has replaced Datuk Zainuddin Abdul Wahab, who retired on 10 April 2023 after reaching the compulsory retirement age.
Ammar has been serving in Tourism Malaysia for 35 years and has extensive experience in the tourism sector of Malaysia.
He holds a philosophy doctorate degree in hotel and tourism management and has been serving as senior director, international promotion division (Americas/Europe/Oceania) in his last position.
As the new director general, Ammar has been entrusted with the responsibility of strengthening the promotion of Malaysian tourism and empowering the local tourism sector.
With the reopening of international borders, he will spearhead the efforts of Tourism Malaysia to attract more tourists to Malaysia and lead the mission to make Visit Malaysia Year 2025 a success.
The Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, and the MOTAC staff have congratulated Ammar on his appointment and expressed their appreciation to Zainuddin for his contributions and service.
