1,000 trees planted for a greener Bukittinggi

BUKITTINGGI, Indonesia: June 4, 2026

A tree-planting programme involving 1,000 seedlings was held as part of the 4th International Minangkabau Literacy Festival (IMLF) 2026, reflecting a shared commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable development.

The initiative, held at Tabiang Barasok, also formed part of the centenary celebration of Jam Gadang, one of Bukittinggi’s most iconic tourism landmarks.

Bukittinggi Vice Mayor Isnu Asis said the programme aimed to preserve the environment for future generations while encouraging public participation in conservation efforts.

“Today, people from various parts of the world have gathered with one common purpose — to protect, care for and green the earth for future generations,” he said.

He welcomed delegates from various countries, including Sabah, and thanked them for participating in the four-day festival.

According to Isnu, the programme was initially planned with only 100 seedlings but was expanded to 1,000 following support from the city leadership.

“The programme represents our effort to maintain environmental sustainability and improve quality of life through reforestation and the expansion of green spaces,” he said.

He added that the centenary celebration of Jam Gadang should not only commemorate Bukittinggi’s heritage but also strengthen environmental awareness among the community.

The tree-planting initiative forms part of the city’s broader efforts to preserve its natural beauty while supporting sustainable urban development.

Meanwhile, a representative of the West Sumatra Regional Police, Anis, said the force was pleased to support IMLF 2026, describing the festival as an important platform for promoting cultural and environmental awareness.

He said environmental issues have become increasingly significant in West Sumatra following a series of natural disasters and environmental challenges in recent years.

Under its culture policing programme, the police have incorporated environmental conservation into community engagement activities, including tree-planting projects in flood- and landslide-affected areas.

Anis said about 8,000 trees have been planted across the province to date.

As part of its support for IMLF 2026, the West Sumatra Regional Police contributed 1,000 tree seedlings, which were symbolically handed over to the festival organising committee.
