Sabah is stepping up its push to become a hub for water sports tourism, actively supporting the growth of stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) over the past two years.
Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Jafry Ariffin said Sabah’s commitment to the sport was reinforced during the flag-off of the Borneo International SUP Marathon 2026 at a hotel.
“This landmark event marks a proud milestone for our state as we host an international SUP marathon — a sport that combines balance, endurance and determination while navigating open waters,” he said in a Facebook post.

He added: “Today, participants are not just competing in a race. They are part of a global movement that celebrates sportsmanship, resilience and the unique connection between people and nature.
“Against the stunning backdrop of Sabah’s coastline, every stroke reflects courage, discipline and the true spirit of adventure.”
To ensure safety and promote local talent, the Ministry has deployed 36 International Surfing Association (ISA)-certified local guides, fully sponsored by the state.
He said the event also forms part of Sabah’s broader preparations for Visit Sabah 2027, strengthening the state’s position on the global sporting and tourism map.
The marathon features two challenging categories — 21km and 42km — testing participants’ endurance across Sabah’s open waters.
