Sabah strengthens cultural tourism through Murut centre in Tenom

Sabah is stepping up efforts to promote cultural tourism through the development of the Sabah Murut Cultural Centre Project in Tenom (PKMST), said Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Jafry Ariffin.

He said the State Government remains committed to empowering heritage-based tourism by preserving the cultural identity of the Murut community while enhancing the sector’s long-term sustainability.

“The PKMST is a strategic initiative that emphasises authenticity, historical storytelling and immersive experiences, enabling visitors to gain a deeper appreciation of Murut heritage,” he said.

A key feature of the project is the construction of the Rumah Tengkorak (Skull House), which will serve as an iconic structure and cultural interpretation centre.

Jafry said the building will house historical exhibitions, traditional artefacts and screening areas showcasing the origins of the Murut people.

“The design adopts a symbolic concept, guiding visitors through a structured cultural narrative that is both educational and meaningful,” he added.

The project will also include 10 burial huts representing various Murut sub-ethnic groups such as Tagol, Timugon and Tangara, each reflecting distinct architectural identities.

He said the development goes beyond tourism, functioning as a platform for education and greater historical understanding.

“It will also generate direct benefits for the local community through tourism-related activities and cultural interpretation programmes,” he said.

The project, which began on May 6, 2025, is scheduled for completion on May 6, 2026, at a cost of RM825,559.60.

Jafry said the centre is expected to emerge as a new cultural tourism icon in Tenom and further strengthen Sabah’s position as a leading heritage tourism destination.

He added that the project is being implemented with due regard for cultural sensitivities and in line with heritage conservation principles to ensure its long-term sustainability.
