Tenom Wesak Day to draw 800 visitors

About 800 devotees and tourists are expected to attend the 2026 state-level Wesak Day celebration in Tenom on May 30 and 31.

A 6.5km charity run will also be held on May 30, open to public participation, said event chairman Datuk Seri Winston Liaw during a courtesy call on Sabah Tourism Board (STB) chief executive officer Julinus Jeffrey Jimit at his office.

STB supported the event with a RM20,000 sponsorship, presented to Sabah Tenom Buddhist Association chairman and organising chairperson Jackie Wong.

“We expect devotees from Hong Kong, Peninsular Malaysia, Brunei and Sarawak to take part,” said Liaw.

Details of the event will be available on STB’s promotional webpage.

He said the celebration is expected to draw more visitors to Tenom to experience its rural culture, local cuisine and customs, while boosting its profile domestically and internationally.
