The booming\ntourism industry in Sabah has also caught the eyes of the Ubian community,\nwhich led them to form the Usukan Tourism Association in December 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The association\u2019s\nmembers numbering about 100 are living around the spectacular coastal area of\nKampung Kuala Abai, which is stretching along the brilliant sandy beach of\nUsukan cove.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its President, Liasin Kaloh, ex-principal of SMK Pekan II said the countryside fishing village offers a relaxing place for visitors to spend their holidays surrounded by lush greeneries and beautiful sand beach sceneries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe want to\npromote the culture, food and custom of the Ubian people through the\ncommunity-based tourism,\u201d said Liasin who has reached the mandatory retirement\nage of 60 last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the Ubian\ncommunity are living in the coastal areas, therefore the tourism products that\nthey are promoting are very much related to their livelihood and the sea. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have\nwater-based products to showcase such as catching anchovy using the traditional\nfishing platform, krill, sea cucumber, squid, harvesting seaweed and fishing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe will\nprovide a boat ride for the tourists to see the bagang (traditional fishing\nplatform), to get the idea and have a closer look at how we catch the anchovies\nin the morning after having their breakfast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe anchovies\nseason start in December until April and sometimes the squids and giant clams\ncan be spotted while we are out there fishing near the shore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe will also demonstrate\nto visitors how we process krill into sambal belacan (chili paste) and the prepare\nto dry the anchovies under the sun. The consumers can buy these two items direct\nfrom the villagers or at the tamu (bazaar) market in Kota Belud, Telipok and\nTenghilan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOther than\nthat, visitors will also see how the villagers process the salted fish which is\nalso their staple food,\u201d Liasin said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Besides seafood,\nthe waterfront of Usukan cove is also teeming with variety of marine life such\nas fish, squid and giant clam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are also engaged\nin a collaboration with Inno Travel & Tour Services Sdn Bhd, which is a subsidiary\nof Yayasan Sabah to organise snorkeling and diving activities at nearby Pandan-Pandan\nIsland. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFor those who just\nwant to have fun at the calming waters around the cove area, they can opt for\nthe banana boat ride. The waters there will turn rough during the end of the\nyear monsoon season, maybe in near future we can introduce the surfing activities,\u201d\nhe said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said they\nalso want to promote the Ubian traditional dresses, dances, cuisines and handmade\nhandicrafts as souvenirs for the visitors especially from China and Korea during\ntheir sojourn to the laidback village and for that reason, they have\nestablished the Ubian Ethnic Culture and Welfare Association, which is chaired\nby Liasin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the\nmeantime, he has also produced the inventory of Ubian and a dictionary in Bahasa\nMalayu and English languages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
