Cultural tourism can generate income for rural communities, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said.

He said Sabah’s diverse arts and cultures are assets that draw tourists.

“The State Government is committed to promoting culture as a driver of local tourism, in line with the Sabah Maju Jaya Development Plan,” he said.

His speech was read by Women, Health and People’s Wellbeing Minister Datuk Julita Majungki at the opening of the 2026 state-level Gong Festival at the Matunggong New Township open hall.

Hajiji said Sumangkap Village in Matunggong is renowned for traditional gong-making, and the skill of its artisans proves heritage can thrive when preserved.

“We must ensure Sumangkap remains a centre for the gong-making industry,” he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I urge gong makers to keep innovating \u2014 preserve the uniqueness of this heritage while exploring modern designs that can reach international markets.”

He said the effort needs support from all parties, and young people must be involved so the skill is passed down.

The Gong Festival, he said, is more than a cultural event. It celebrates heritage, showcases community culture and fosters unity across ethnicities and religions.

“For generations, the sound of the gong has accompanied ceremonies and harvest celebrations, bringing together people from diverse backgrounds,” he said.

The festival preserves gong-making and allows younger generations to discover their heritage, he said.

This aligns with this year’s theme, “Echoes of the Gong, the Spirit of Culture,” which represents heritage, pride and identity.

The Gong Festival, like other ethnic celebrations, is a reminder that unity in diversity is Sabah’s strength, he said.
