Sir George Jessel, is in town to discuss plans to establish a heritage gallery highlighting the city’s history and the legacy of the North Borneo Chartered Company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

George, a descendant of Sir Charles James Jessel, held a meeting with Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, Kota Kinabalu City Hall Mayor Datuk Seri Dr Sabin Samitah and director-general Datuk Lifred Wong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joniston said the discussion was positive as it aligns with City Hall\u2019s efforts to create development opportunities for tourism activities while strengthening initiatives to promote Kota Kinabalu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe idea of this gallery could help highlight the city\u2019s history and boost heritage tourism, as it connects with Kota Kinabalu\u2019s past,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joniston, who is also chairman of Sabah Tourism Board, added that he had briefed Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor on the initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sabin said the proposal reflects the importance of preserving historical connections while strengthening goodwill and cultural understanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs we pursue our vision of becoming a smart, liveable and globally connected coastal city, we remain committed to building a future rooted in heritage, inclusivity and sustainability,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

George said it is encouraging to see City Hall so committed to preserving and sharing the history of Jesselton, adding that such enthusiasm is vital to the gallery\u2019s success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

George also toured Menara Kinabalu and had the opportunity to briefly speak with the Chief Minister about the gallery proposal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The state capital of Sabah began as a small settlement called Api-Api.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1899, it came under the administration of the British North Borneo Company, which developed it into its new administrative centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The town was later renamed Jesselton in recognition of Sir Charles James Jessel, who served as the company\u2019s vice chairman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
