And you are\nwelcome to the Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary as its owner, Michael Lee\nHing Huat has a 17-hectare land awaiting to be rehabilitated after being destroyed\nby a failed oil palm cultivation project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have just\nacquired this piece of land recently, from our next door land owner. He cleared\nhad the land to plant oil palms but unsuccessful so we offered to buy the land\nfrom him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have\nalready warned him earlier that the soil there are not suitable for oil palm and\nany other crops but he refused to listen. Now after five to six years of trying,\nthe crops failed to take off and he finally gave up,\u201d Lee shared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That piece of\nland was a mangrove forest and it was the natural habitat for a group of\nproboscis monkeys, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the\nclearing of the mangrove forest has forced the proboscis monkeys to venture\ninto Lee\u2019s land in search for food and shelter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thus, this saw\nthe opening of the platform A inside the sanctuary which is a second feeding\nground for the proboscis monkeys after the original platform B, which is\nlocated 1.1 kilometre apart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo now we want\nto invite the people including volunteers and students to come here to help us\nto replant the destroyed mangrove forest to provide a place for the displaced\nproboscis monkeys to thrive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis school\nstudents can use this as part of the outdoor learning activities to learn about\nthe conservation of nature and the preservation of the proboscis monkeys,\u201d he\nsaid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lee said they\nwill provide the seedlings for whoever want to offer their time to help replant\nthe mangrove forest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was\nconfident through the support from the generous public, the plan to rehabilitate\nthe destroyed mangrove forest is achievable as they had successfully replanted\n10-hectare land with trees after 20 years, which is just next to the 17-hectare\nland. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rehabilitated\nmangrove forest will be an additional area for the proboscis monkeys on top of\nthe present 260-hectare which was untouched inside Lee\u2019s 1,000-hectare oil palm\nplantation which he and his land brother embarked in 1994.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The proboscis\nmonkeys were discovered inside Lee\u2019s land sometime in 1997 after the famous\nincident of frequent missing pancakes stole by the primates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And today the sanctuary is divided into two sections for tourism and conservation.-HS<\/p>\n\n\n\n
